Classic
Illustration

For a long while I was seen as a "comic-bookish" artist. While I can't deny the influence comic books had in my style, I felt the need to branch out a bit. I eventually developed a more "classic" illustration style that I am constantly honing. The results of this personal revolution can be seen below.

Sidhe Archer vs Joten Raider (2007)
My first fully-painted-from-the-start piece. Those of you who acquired Expeditious Retreat's Pozas Art Pack vol. 1: Heroes might recognize the lady in the above picture. I wanted to give the sidhe archer a look that more closely resembled 18th and 19th century paintings, hence the flowing pink gown. I also wanted her to have a more Celtic feel, hence the design of her fey bow. And the giant reflects his Norse origins with a viking-based helm, recreated as a rendition of a red dragon (yeah, those are dragon horns and teeth in the helm). I am utterly proud of this picture.

You can see the level of work I put in in this detail of the sidhe archer (suitable for wallpaper purposes).

Wonder Woman (2007)
Sometimes I get an image in my head and I can't rest until it's commited to paper (or screen). In this case, it's an image of the Amazon Princess going walkabout in America, getting in touch with the simpler folk. The result was this image.

Endless Horizon (2006)
The last of Fiery Dragon's tie-in counter collections to Expeditious Retreat's Monster Geographica books, "Endless Horizon" covers plains and deserts. This collection has been an ordeal to finish, with other projects and real life often taking the spotlight, but it is close to being finished. Hang in there!

From Beneath (2006)
The biggest release of the year is, without a doubt, Monte Cook's magna opus Ptolus: City by the Spire, due for GenCon 2006. Fiery Dragon will be releasing a huge Counter Collection to cover this product, and this is the cover. In it, a captain of the Comissar's Men fires his double pistol at some aberration that reaches the streets. As the tagline says, in Ptolus there's always something going on beneath the surface.

Bluespawn Godslayer (2006)
One of my favorite creatures in D&D is the blue dragon, in no small part due to Todd Lockwood's amazing design for it in the Monster Manual. Since the Monster Manual IV is out, I decided to try my hand at the bluespawn godslayer, a draconic creation of Tiamat, Queen of Evil Dragonkind.

Corrupted (2006)
This picture is part of a legend. The legend of a module of such a caliber that no mere hobbyist gamer would dare face it. A module for elite DMs, from the mind of an elite DM: Doug Douglasson, star of 'Fear of Girls'. The module, 'Pleasure Prison of the B'thuvian Demon Whore', was released this year by Expeditious Retreat Press, for characters who are gods among men. Art master Todd Lockwood did the cover, and this piece was the back cover.

So you can see the process behind my newer pictures, follow the links below for earlier stages of 'Corrupted', and use your 'Back' button to return to this gallery:

Perilous Heights (2005)
This is the cover to Perilous Heights, the Fiery Dragon tie-in product for Expeditious Retreat's Monster Geographica: Hills & Mountains. I am very proud of how it turned out, evoking a tradition among fantasy illustrations of sweeping natural backgrounds. This one was done shortly after master Keith Parkinson passed away, and I had Keith's style in mind while working on it.

George And The Dragons (2005)
I write a monthly column on the largest RPG magazine in Brazil, Dragão Brasil, about d20 stuff. One of the columns introduced the dragonsteed, a horse-shaped dragon created by good draconic gods to serve as steeds to mighty paladins (just an adaptation of half-dragon heavy warhorses). To illustrate the dragonsteed, I made a homage to Saint George, considered the patron saint by brazilian roleplaying gamers.

Druid Amazon (2005)
The original cover for Fiery Dragon's Untamed Woodlands product, this image protrays an amazon-style druidess and her thornie (dog-like plant) companion. The armor is made of bronzewood, btw. Fiery Dragon ultimately chose to have a cover that had more of a landscape feel to it, and I agree (the final cover can be found on this page). But this cover is still one of my highlights in the human form.

Rooftop Duel (2005)
This is the cover image for Fiery Dragon's adventure Circle of Rites, a tie-in product for Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved. A human mageblade gets the jump on a litorian foe straight out of the adventure, right down to the dreadlocks and the snakeskin armor.

Ancient Darkness (2005)
This is the cover image for Fiery Dragon's counter product of the same name, a tie-in with Expeditious Retreat's Monster Geographica: Underground. The spelunking character first appeared in Counter Collection 2, and is performing a variation of the dulfersitz rappeling technique. As for the tentacled thing, there are a few monsters in the book that fit that image. :)

Monk vs. Skeleton (2004)
This image was done to try and make the Eastern-inspired monk fit into the typical Western-inspired D&D milieu. The character first appeared in an article I wrote for the Fiery Dragon website detailing a variant monk, the Monastic Dragon.

Untamed Woodlands (2005)
This is the cover image for Fiery Dragon's counter product of the same name, a tie-in with Expeditious Retreat's Monster Geographica: Forest. The character is an old website favorite, the elf shaman (from my Oddballs gallery), while the creature she's consulting with is a mighty Royal Stag.

Heroes of Arcana (2005)
These three heroes come from the cover of Fiery Dragon's Arcana Evolved Counter Collection, a tie-in with Malhavoc's AE line. The characters depicted are a giant rune warrior, a human unfettered and a quickling faen snake totem warrior (that was a mouthful!), ready for action!

Titanic Battle (2005)
This is the image for the Arcana Evolved BattleBox, one of Fiery Dragon's support products for Malhavoc Press' Arcana Evolved line. The image evokes not only the enmity between giants and dragons, but also the rivalry between both races' protégés, the sibeccai and dracha.

In case anyone's wondering, the giant is a Oathsworn 12/Giant 3/Giant Paragon 5.

Murky Depths & Slimy Shores (2004)
This is the cover image for Fiery Dragon's counter product of the same name, a tie-in with Expeditious Retreat's Monster Geographica: Aquatic. The character is a paladin that first appeared as a counter in Counter Collection 2, while the monster is a vampiric ooze, who can animate its slain victims as zombies.

Shifter Druid (2005)
Much like the warforged, it took me a while to enjoy the shifters. I went through the description of shifters in the Eberron Campaign Setting and produced this image based on those details.

Halfling Wolf Rider (2004)
I wanted to depict a halfling riding an appropriate mount, but I didn't want to do a riding dog - and certainly not a lab or a Great Dane. So I gave this halfling lady a big bad wolf. And tight pants.

What? :-)

Warforged (2004)
I must admit, at first I wasn't too keen on the idea of a construct PC race. But these metallic guys won me over. I sat down and put together this image of a warfored with Adamantine Body - notice how his body is of a different hue from his regular steel shield.

Valenar Elf (2004)
After reading about the Valenar elves from Eberron, I was immediately enraptured by their warrior tradition and their connection to horses, not to mention the very creative way they emulate their ancestors. So I sat down and did this portrayal of a Valenar elf ready to spring into action with his/her trusted double-bladed scimitar in hand.

BattleBox (2004)
This is the cover of the Fiery Dragon product "BattleBox".
Being the author and illustrator of the product, it's very nice to see it so well received by the gaming community. Since it's a box of accessories for tabletop play, I depicted a battle (BattleBox, remember) and included the squares that make up a d20 battlemat. It's also my first fully-painted dragon and I am very proud of it!

Heirs to the Adventure (2003)
This piece portrays the characters in my current campaign: Alicia "Eladrinelle" Hannigan, a half-elven battledancer, and her elven cat, Cheshire; Tandya Carey, a cleric of the sun; and Jander Ghering, a ranger, and his faithful companion, Bow. This is a homage to a fine group of friends who have lots of fun together.

A Night At the Movies (2003)
This time it's Modern action getting Medieval. The contrast between sword and palmtop or human and troll is as evident as the fact that the troll lost an arm, but isn't bleeding and keeps on fighting! That spell'd better be good...

The Endless Battle (2003)
Elf against Orc. This war has raged since immemorial times. Understandably,
it was the theme of this picture, the first one I did entirely through digital
painting. And one I like very much.

The Giant's Skull Revealed (2003)
This illustration is a revisitation to one of my favorite pieces, which appeared in the adventure The Giant's Skull (2001), the first adventure I did interior artwork for. It is now my current favorite.

Swashbuckling (2003)
Originally published as the cover of the EN World Player's Journal #2.
I like this image a lot, it strikes a nice balance between detail and motion.
Sketched in pencil and painted digitally, it's my first Classic Illustration
to be published.
