The Giant's
Skull Revealed
This ominous piece was done in
the last minute, to fill up some extra space in the adventure.
Despite the fact that it took just a few hours to finish, it's
the illustration I'm most proud of in the whole product! The
greatest challenge was to avoid having the Skull-bearer look
like a dork with a big head. :) |
|
Dire (Bear)
Straits
Ah, the headaches of light-placement.
After the piece was all pencilled, I had to "spot" the shadows
across the elven girl and the dire bear. And it covered almost
all of them! Grrr... But what was left was made all the more
intense from the perspective and the deep shadows. Now you know
how a 30-foot bear can sneak up on someone! |
|
The Horror
Facial expressions. The ultimate
challenge of an illustrator. It's one thing to do pin-ups of
characters looking cool, but to have those characters "act"
is a much greater challenge. This piece also shows another great
challenge: to make the characters look different from one another,
instead of just being clones with different hair. Note the vertical
slits on the elven rogue! |
|
The Heroes'
Shower
Who said adventuring can't include
relaxing moments? The iconic heroes from Of Sound Mind enjoy
a nice waterfall-shower. The human barbarian seems most at home
here, while the dwarven paladin is concerned about rust and
the gnome psion complains something about drenched robes. A
lighter moment during an otherwise dark adventure. |
|
Tavern
Talk
Face it. Ever since the "Prancing
Pony", taverns have been a staple in fantasy. And in this piece
I managed to put together a typical fantasy tavern, complete
with a half-elven owner, half-orc patrons, adventuring mementos
on the wall, elven licqor (check the kegs) and a gnome psion
showing off his talents to impress the dwarven paladin. "This,
my friend, is a pint!" |
|
Drow Couple
Being written by Monte Cook, "Queen
of Lies" is crammed with fascinating NPCs. These two lovebirds
were the first ones I got to portray. Fiery Dragon sent me their
stat blocks (which are HUGE) and I tried to cram as much information
from there as I could. The great thing about QoL is that drow
aren't clones of each other, and I didn't see a single dual-scimitar-wielding
type! Bonus! :) |
|
Drow Fashion
Here we have a prime example of
what a fashionable drow will be wearing this summer. Note the
cynical smirk, the short hair and the casual accessorizing,
with the scroll pouch and the crystal ball adding just that
mystical touch that'll be all the rage in the Netherdeep! (Plus
I heard he scored with Heidi Klum!) |
 |
Torture
Chamber
I know drows are infamous for
being sadistic evil creeps, but this new torture device is too
terrible even for them! Seems like they chain the male prisoners
to the wall and force them to look at this scantly-clad chick!
The horror, the horror! But she looks like she'd be mighty grateful
for being released from her chains... |

Jelaria
Darrek
Straight out of the "Psionics
Toolkit", by Mike Mearls, comes this paladin/psion half-elf
who takes the battle against crime to the enemy's camp: the
seedy underworld! And no, that isn't a cloak of the bat. Who'd
dress up as a flying rat, for cryin' out loud? |
|
Psionic
Line-up
With the 3E rules for psions,
you have unlimited possibilities, some of which are showcased
here: elf shaper, halfling savant, half-orc egoist, gnome nomad
and dwarf seer. Can you spot their Psicrystals? |
|
Alba,
Goddess of the Moon
Straight out of the Scrollworks
e-zine (a great read!) comes the Lady of Misteries, Alba, goddess
of the Moon in Fiery Dragon's world of Karathis. Her portfolio
include magic, secrets and guardianship over the dead. This
statue's partially based on Michelangelo's wonderful Pietà. |
|
Solorien,
God of the Sun
This one almost made it into Scrollworks,
but in the end only his text made it (damn my slow connection!).
Solorien is the brother of Alba, and his order is featured prominently
in the adventure "The Giant's Skull". He presides over heroes,
light and bravery, but his church is getting into conflict with
Alba's. |

NeMoren's
Battle
This image, from Fiery Dragon's
free campaign setting PDF "World of Karathis: West Wood
Barony", shows Kragor NeMoren (builder of NeMoren's Vault)
and his companions battling their way through Himrak orcs, trying
to defend the elven capital of Dol Runeth. Can you spot all
the d20 rules showcased in this image? |
 |
Xi'opho Sunmoon and
Berratag Strensworth
Not all paladins get along well.
In this image, also from FDP's "West Wood" PDF, legendary
half-orc paladin Xi'opho Sunmoon teaches his arrogant peer Berratag
a lesson on humility. And they both follow the same god! |
|
Captain
Rarith, Dragonslayer
Few commanders are fit to watch
over the border castles in the West Wood area. One of them is
the famed dragonslayer Rarith, who cares for Kalendia's safety
from the towers of Castle Strang. The West Wood Barony PDF can
be downloaded from Fiery Dragon's website. |
