Combat

Ongenfrith fights with Zahkohl.  Zahkohl is a sword given to Ongenfrith by Larbius the Ice Devil.  It is a +2 keen unholy chaotic longsword.  It does +2d6 against any good and +2d6 against any lawful (+4d6 vs Lawful Good).   With a threat range of 17 to 20.  In the hands of Ongenfrith it has a threat range of 16 to 20 (Improved Critical feat).

Abyssal Blast (Su): Once per day, Ongenfrith can unleash an abyssal blast of hellish fire.  The blast explodes in a 20-ft radius spread anywhere in the range of 800 feet.  The fire inflicts 10d6 points of damage.  Half of the damage is fire damage, but the rest results from divine power and is therefore not subject to being reduced by fire protection magic.  A successful Reflex save negates half the total damage.

Fear Aura (Su): Ongenfrith is shrouded in a dreadful aura of death and evil.  Critters of less than 5 HD within a 15 foot radius must succeed at a Will save or be affected as though by the fear spell as cast by an 18th level sorcerer.

Undead Followers: Ongenfrith attracts lesser undead critters that happen to exist within a 200 mile radius.  He can have up to 36 hit dice of followers, which are composed of 1d6 ghouls, 1d4 ghasts, 1d12 medium skeletons, 1d4 wights, or 1d8 medium sized zombies once per week.  These critters remain in Gholgoroth's service until destroyed.

Damage Reduction (Su): Ongenfrith's undead body is tough, giving him damage reduction 15/+1.

Immunities (Ex): Ongenfrith is immune to cold, electricity, fire and polymorphing affects in addition to immunities granted to all undead.

Spell Resistance (Su): Ongenfrith has SR 20.

Summon Mount (Su): Ongenfrith has a nightmare mount.

Turn Immunity (Ex): Ongenfrith cannot be turned, however he can be dispelled with Holy Word.

History of Ongenfrith, the Revenant Death Knight

Ongenfrith was a great paladin of
Ahmn, Tyr's Order.  He fought evil in the cause of good for years.  But his pride began to grow.  Then Larbius the Gelugon entered into the paladin's life.  Larbius kidnapped one of Ongenfrith's loyal retainers and took his place.  Larbius began to feed Ongenfrith's ego and pride.  But the charade couldn't last forever.  Ongenfrith soon began to suspect that his retainer was something different.  He managed to figure out that that a devil had taken the retainer's place.  Larbius was on his toes.  Larbius went to where he had spirited the retainer away and returned the man to Ongenfrith's keep.   Ongenfrith burst in on the retainer and challenged him.  The man, of course, pleaded with the paladin that all is well now.  Ongenfrith dispelled magic on the retainer.  Larbius, waiting in the darkness, cast an illusion, turning the retainer into the image of a gelugon, an ice devil.  The paladin slew the retainer.

The paladin grew distraught after the truth became known.  He vowed to avenge the retainer and slay the devil responsible.  His pride had been hurt.  Larbius knew he had struck a serious blow against the paladin.  Larbius continued to plague the paladin, haunting him, making sure the paladin continued to make mistakes.  Ongenfirth knew they were mistakes not of his making, but the Order's leaders were not so convinced.  They convened to court martial the paladin.  The paladin swore before the court that he would kill whoever was responsible for this blight on his record.  He was referring to the devil, but the court took it as a personal threat.  They voted to remove Ongenfrith from the Order and took him away.  That night, the presiding judge was killed and witnesses pointed, wrongly, to Ongenfrith.  The surviving judges ordered Ongenfrith's execution.

On the gallows, Ongenfrith was furious.  He knew he had done nothing wrong.  That he was being toyed with.  But his pride was now seriously wounded.  He would not die like a commoner, like a criminal.  To be hung and left for the vultures to pick at his body was an insult he could not take.  He spoke to the devil he knew was nearby, watching.  "Spare me this fate, devil.  Take anything from me you want, devil, but spare me this fate."

Larbius had to smile.  He hadn't expected this.  He granted the paladin unholy power, which the paladin accepted.  Strength filled the paladin's limbs and he slew the headman and the guards with his bare hands.  Witnesses cried out as they saw Ongenfrith's skin pale and dry up before their eyes.  His hair turned white and his eyes ran like water, to be replaced by a glowing pinprick of bright red light.  Ongenfrith cried out, and his voice was like the voice of a hundred souls in torment.  Larbius placed a Baatorian sword behind a priest of Tyr.  Ongenfrith, seeing the guards running to take him out, saw the sword.  He slew the intervening priest and accepted the weapon.  He slew twelve knights of the Order in his escape, and over forty peasants.  The bowels of Hell opened and a nightmare sprang forth, which Ongenfrith also accepted.  Ongenfrith the Death Knight was born.

Ongenfrith today wanders the world like a revenant, seeking some lost meaning for both his mortal life and his undeath.  He is one of the most inventive of Inzeladun's death knights in his evil.  He seeks out the proud and brings to them the Fall.
