The Place: Lamapacher (Alisander)
Notes on the City: Alisander, though not the capital of Lamapacher (there isn't a capital for Lamapacher), it is Lamapacher's largest and most influential city. Indeed it is the largest city in all the Western World, boasting a population of 1,500,000 people. The town guards are usually mounted during the spring, summer, and early autumn months to be able to maneuver through the crowds. Although very tolerant of odd religions, it is illegal to perform human sacrifice within the city limits. It is also illegal to cast spells within the city limits. Arson is considered the worst possible crime by the government of Alisander and that is punishable by drowning. It is also illegal to wear armor heavier than chainmail within the city limits without a proper permit. Drychtnoth is ruled by Lord Tasurth who strives to increase the prosperity of the great city. Alisander has the fifth largest shipyards in Inzeladun. Its major export is grain sold to Drychtnoth.
Dovinyae arrived in Alisander seeking a man who had stolen a powerful magical robe and was abusing the balance of nature with it. A dream led him to Alisander with a clue to seek out a paladin. Ragnar, who left his homeland for this faraway land, was seeking a scroll of runes rumored to be housed in a temple of spiders. Alrek and Amrem had met in Lamapacher and became good friends. Unfortunately, due to Amrem's excellent aptitudes for trouble, they ran afoul of the law in Alisander and was in hiding. Xavier the Pure was sent by his Order to the Lamapachan city of Alisander to combat the Evil to be found in the Temple of Modab Om. The Order of Silver Law (Xavier's Order of Paladinhood, worshippers of Thomtain Hob and the Silver Tree, made sure he was lawfully licensed to wear platemail armor in the city of Alisander as Paladin's are not allowed to break otherwise just laws).
Xavier, not knowing where to find the Temple of Modab Om, followed the sounds of bells to a temple of the Silver Tree. Seeing the paladin from his dream, Dovinyae followed. Ragnar used a tavern barkeep to learn of the Temple of Modab Om and its location. Alrek and Amrem, previously hiding underneath an abandoned temple of an unknown god, met Leyan the Fat (a notorious fence), then went out into the streets right across from the Temple of the Silver Tree. The pair ran across a small slaver caravan bound for the Temple of Modab Om. Seeing the three oppressed girls captive in the wagon-cage, they attacked. The sounds of the attack attracted Xavier who ran from the Temple of the Silver Tree, his sword drawn to slay the slavers. Ragnar arrived on the scene, and, recognizing the livery of the slavers, also joined the combat, requesting that one be kept alive.
The slavers, but for one, were all slain. The girls were freed. One slaver was captive with a broken leg. Dovinyae broke through the crowd of people and led the group of combatants into the Temple of the Silver Tree, admonishing the crowds of onlookers to point to the east. When the guards arrived on the scene, the crowd sent them east while a priest of the Silver Tree squirreled away the party in a secret room under the altar.
The Temple of the Silver Tree was a huge building of stone and marble. In the center was a silver plated statue of a tree and a marble altar. The secret room was under the altar. The resident priest's name was Jamby Niil.
Dovinyae and the others broke the spirit of the captive guard and he gave them the passphrase into the Temple of Modab Om : "It has eight legs." The druid cast a cure light wounds on the guard. This display of magic awed the guard and he cast aside the religion of Modab Om immediately. At the recommendation of Dovinyae the guard, a Drychtnothian named Xakol Ximok, joined the Temple of the Silver Tree. To make sure Xakol wasn't lying, Dovinyae asked the resident priest to cast a Detect Lie spell on him. The priest, though unable to cast spells, pretended to do so in order that Xakol would most assuredly tell the truth about the passphrase.
Outside the Temple of the Silver Tree, the party separated, intending to regroup later outside the Temple of Modab Om. Ragnar, Alrek, and Amrem went to the Smith's District to look for weapons. Dovinyae and Xavier went to case the Temple of Modab Om and make their plans.
In the Smith's district, they bought a few daggers, but could hardly afford even the most meager of the larger weapons. Ragnar inquired about silver weapons. In disgust over their financial situation and the economics of Alisander, they left to rejoin the druid and paladin.
In the meantime, Dovinyae and Xavier had, by use of the passphrase, entered into the Temple of Modab Om. It was a long, flat building, approx. two stories in height, made of rough stone. The interior was columned and decorated with spider graphics. Low benches lined the walls between the columns. At the end of the hall was Adley the Torch Lighter, an acolyte in the Temple. From him they found out that the Temple, after the fiasco outside the Silver Tree Temple, had twelve Drychtnothian mercenaries employed as guards, there were 50 worshippers, and 25 of those worshippers were scheduled to be sacrificed tonight.
The druid and paladin returned outside and shared their information with the rest of the party, who had arrived at the rendezvous. They also found out that the guards were changed every two hours. As a group, pretending to be hopeful sacrifices, they gave the passphrase and re-entered the temple. Once inside, Xavier the Pure went to talk to old Adley and keep him occupied. Amrem pretended to faint. The others opened the outside doors and asked for help. One of the two Drychtnothian guards came in and was biffed on the head by Dovinyae. They took his garb, hid the body, made sure that old Adley down the hall didn't notice. They asked the other guard to come on in. The Drychtnothian came in and got his chest crushed and/or stabbed by the four intruders. They took his garb and went outside to stand guard. A man named Xalph walked up. He was a "skull-smasher" and he gave the password. They refused him admittance and gave him a hard time. Finally they let him in and whopped him on the head. They hid his body and took his garments. They waited for two more guard changes and killed the four replacements and took their armor. They had now killed six of the twelve guards.
They went into the temple and had Adley lead them downstairs to be sacrificed. Adley took their arms and armor and clothed them in a white garment and then he led them downstairs. Adley left them at the holding pens (which contained more than a score of drugged people) and entered the worship area. The party knocked out the guard at the holding pen and went to retrieve their own weapons and armors. While they fetched their goodies, a man came out of a secret door bearing a keg of the antidote to the drug that had been administered to those in the pens. Dovinyae, posing as the guard, whupped on him. The others came down and hid under the stairs. Dovinyae began to administer the drug antidote to the prisoners. As he did this, the twenty four worshippers walked down the stairs and went past him into the worship area. Amrem led the now aware prisoners out of the temple. When he returned they were seeking the secret door the other guard came out of. Amrem just walked up to the door and knocked on it. Someone on the other side opened the door and Amrem said he needed everyone's help. The last four guards filed out of the armory and were defeated by the heroes.
When the cue came to bring in the prisoners, Ragnar and Amrem led the groggy guard they had knocked out earlier into the worshipping area and threw him into the Pit of Om, where the giant 12' diameter spider killed him. Dovinyae used his psionic Ectoplasmic Form power and moved through the wall to the other side of the pit where the High Priest Modab stood. He rushed the priest and, as they tangled, accidentally fell into the Pit of Om. Xavier and Alrek rushed out into the worship area in the confusion. Om fell on Dovinyae, who stabbed the oversized arachnid with his dagger. Ragnar and Amrem hit the spider as it fell, then, when Xavier and Alrek arrived, all four of them jumped into the Pit of Om and killed the giant spider. Stunned, Modab the priest, just stood there watching. When the five of them climbed out of the pit, he took off running. He was caught by Ragnar first when he slipped in water created by Dovinyae. They pounded on him and killed him. They took his head back to the worship area and threw his head into the Pit of Om. The worshippers, disillusioned, left in a frantic hurry.
Dovinyae took the magic robe from Modab and they robbed his body of its wealth. In Modab's quarters they discovered that he wasn't a priest at all, but a thieving rogue running a scam with the magic robe. Ragnar found a journal which showed that the temple had the scroll he sought, but had recently sold it to an academician named Xum Thanill. The group otherwise uncovered approx. 46 gold coins in total, not counting the 8 gold rings Modab wore, the five gold necklaces, and a small silver effigy of a spider. Ragnar took the silver statue to a silversmith and had a silver hammer made out of it. The others took their gold and either kept it or went to buy better weapons in the Smith's District. They also kept several Drychtnothian warswords from the dead guards, as well as suits of chainmail.
All characters were awarded 3000 exp. and 4 character points.
Current Events (i.e.. things going on in the world on the same day this adventure took place): Lord Gothorm, King of Golgaryllgar, was captured by the Dim Triad ( a trio of Vampires). He was rescued by a high priest of Set and taken to Khemt. In Ingara, Admiral Al-Nasim of Azrael was nearing the completion of his plans to conquer the mighty city of Arudumpabswir. General Morgul of Azrael was nearly out of the Unknown Lands and coming closer to the imminent rendezvous at Alisander in Lamapacher to lay siege and capture the prominent city.
History of Alisander: Alisander originated as a nation founded by a wizard/priest hero of the 4th Age (approx. 5000 years ago). The small nation of Alisander was a founding member of the Confederation, the largest Empire ever to exist on Inzeladun. The country of Alisander was destroyed during the Cataclysm that ended the 4th Age. Approximately 500 years ago, the wizard/priest Alisander was revived and he founded the nation a second time in the same area. He built the city, also called Alisander (he had a bit of an ego), and named it the capital of Alisander. The wizard/priest was finally slain by Kreon the One-eyed, a red dragon. Nearly thirty years ago Lord Komaaks founded Lamapacher and went on a conquering spree with his armies of Orcs. The country of Alisander was defeated and absorbed into Lamapacher. Lord Komaaks made the city of Alisander his main trading center and the population exploded and the city grew. Lord Komaaks built the first wall around the city. After Lord Komaaks' death, the unified Lamapacher fell apart into separate city-states. Alisander became the most prominent of these city-states and often has to defend itself from neighboring cities trying to either capture or destroy the powerful city.
