Red Sonja returns to Hyrkania, and pays a visit to the site where her home once stood.  She is told that she is born one of the "Favored" and abandoned by them, and adopted by Ivor and his wife.  The Vision that granted Sonja her strength is supposedly the Favored's  bloodthirsty Red Goddess, and the events in Sonja's life engineered by her to forge Sonja into the Red Goddess's living weapon against the Favored's enemies, the Drommach.  She joins with Zora and does not believe the tales told by the Favored and the Red Goddess.

Sonja and Zora hire out as bodyguards for an Aquilonian lady on a voyage across the Vilayet.  The girl's name was Merina and is a young girl, somewhere around 7 years old.  Merina, orphaned later by battle, is taken by a pirate leader named Kirkos, who renames her as "Valeria", under which name, some years later, she will become infamous as the boldest she-pirate on the Western Ocean.

Sonja kills a treacherous lady captain of a thousand-strong mercenary army.  Still in that army, she is defeated in single combat by treachery by Lassauar.  Sonja is rescued from the planned sexual degradation by a wizard named Achmal, who serves Galon, the new leader of the mercenary army.  Sonja hunts down and kills Lassauar.

Sonja defeats a witch named Vassilisa, Queen of Ice and Blood in Sythia, beyond Hyperborea.  Traveling south to Koth, she learns that Conan has been named commander of Irham's insurrectionist army against King Strabonus.  She signs up with Strabonus and agrees to cut Conan's throat.  She talks to Conan, and they agree to go after the wealth of a Corinthian Baron instead.  But before Conan can resign his commission, Wrarrl, the Devourer of Souls, an eldritch demon-warrior from  the inky blackness between the stars, appears.  Wrarrl transforms a mercenary named Bahkt into a superhuman creature called "The Dark Apostle" and Bahkt attacks and brutally beats Red Sonja.  Conan finds her barely alive.  Conan hunts down and kills Bahkt.

Sonja quickly recovers from her physical injuries, but believes that she has lost her warrior prowess as a result of her defeat by Bahkt.  (During this period, her strength is 8 and she is an 11th level commoner.  She loses all of her bonus feats and other fighter related skills and bonuses.)

Sonja soon regains her powers and fights with Conan alongside Thulsa Doom against the Devourer.  She and Conan travel to Corinthia to loot the baron she wanted to loot.
Combat
She continues to battle with style and grace.   She has abandoned her infamous 'bikini' armor by this point, but still disdains the use of real armor.
